
In the series Centering Indigenous Pedagogies in Mathematics Education: Assessment, speakers explored Assessment as Ecosystems, Storywork, and Pedagogy, seeing assessment as a living and relational practice that nurtures learners and communities. Through stories from nature and classroom projects, they invited educators to reimagine assessment as interconnected, holistic, and responsive.

Session 1: Assessment as Ecosystems, Pedagogy, and Storywork
This session invited educators to explore assessment as ecosystems, pedagogy, and Indigenous Storywork, emphasizing the principles of interrelatedness, holism, and synergy. Drawing from examples in elementary and secondary contexts, educators reflected on how assessment can be guided by Indigenous practices and nurture learning, trust, and community well-being.

Presenters discussed a classroom inquiry project grounded in the Dzunuḵ̓wa story to investigate measurement, ratio, and volume, with assessment embedded throughout.
