Symmetry, Reflections, and Translations Inspired by Haida Art

AUDIENCE
Educators
GRADE LEVEL
Intermediate (4-7)
CONCEPTS
2D, 3D, and Spatial Reasoning
PEDAGOGICAL APPROACH
Creative-Arts

This lesson, created by Dave Wahl with the support of Haida woodcarving artist Cori Savard, taught students about symmetrical design, its application to woodcarving, and the concept of tracing paper for design creation and transfer. Students design their creations on tracing paper which is then transferred to wood to create earrings and pendants.

This lesson included a field trip to Cori Savard’s carving site to deepen students’ understanding of the artistic and mathematics process. Students learned how symmetry is created using a compass or divider and how to manage 3-dimensional symmetry.
