This presentation, by Stan Manu, from the University of Fraser Valley, explores the intersection of beadwork, mathematics, and Indigenous perspectives. We participated in a five-session project that combined learning traditional beading techniques with mathematical concepts, such as patterns and relationships. This unique approach fostered connections between art, science, and Indigenous knowledge systems.
Beyond honing these skills, the project culminated in the creation of a collaborative artwork: a community “hyper-blanket.” This social action piece serves as a tangible representation of the project’s goals – fostering community, cultural awareness, and the integration of diverse knowledge sources.
